The Yoga Posture Savasana: The Art of Deep Relaxation

BY MARIA GIMENO

Shavasana, also known as the corpse pose, is every yoga student's favorite pose. In this article, we will discuss the correct execution and benefits of shavasana.

We are accustomed to shavasana being the final asana in a sequence of Asanas and the logical conclusion of the entire yoga practice. But shavasana can also be practiced as a standalone asana, which we can use simply to relax and recover or to meditate. So, let us look at several options for performing shavasana.

Savasana: An Introduction to the Corpse Pose

The savasana pose is one of the most essential and, paradoxically, most difficult to master in yoga practice. Although it may seem simple at first glance, savasana requires complete surrender and total relaxation of body and mind. This article explores the importance of savasana, how to perform it correctly, and its many benefits.

The Origin of Savasana

The savasana pose, also known as the corpse pose, has its roots deeply intertwined with the classical texts of yoga. One of the most important texts to mention savasana is the «Hatha Yoga Pradipika», a seminal manual of Hatha Yoga written by Swami Swatmarama in the 15th century. This text is one of the foundational works of yoga, providing a comprehensive guide to postures, breathing and meditation.

Meaning in the «Hatha Yoga Pradipika»

In the «Hatha Yoga Pradipika», verse 32 offers a succinct yet profound description of savasana: "Lie on the ground, face up, like a corpse. This is savasana. It eliminates fatigue and allows the mind and the entire body to relax." At first glance, this description seems simple. Yet within its simplicity lies a depth that reveals the essence of this pose. The comparison with a corpse is no coincidence; it symbolizes the act of letting go completely, releasing tensions, worries and the constant internal dialogue.

Interpretation and Philosophy

The corpse pose is not simply about lying on the ground. In the philosophical context of yoga, savasana represents total surrender and a state of complete yielding. In yoga, death is seen not only as the end of life, but as a transition, a state of rest and renewal. By adopting the corpse pose, practitioners are symbolizing this state of transition and renewal, allowing themselves a deep rest and physical and mental renewal.

Depth and Complexity

Although savasana may appear to be simply a resting pose, its effective practice requires significant skill. True relaxation in savasana involves full awareness of every part of the body, a deep connection with the breath, and the ability to release accumulated tension. This can be more challenging than the more physically active poses of yoga, as it requires a balance between physical relaxation and mental alertness.

Evolution and Contemporary Practice

Over the centuries, the practice of savasana has evolved, but its essence has remained unchanged. Today, it is widely recognized not only in traditional yoga, but also in various forms of physical and mental therapy. In modern yoga classes, savasana is used both as a closing pose to consolidate the benefits of the preceding practice and as a standalone practice for meditation and deep relaxation.

Integration into Different Styles of Yoga

Different styles of yoga interpret and use savasana in unique ways. In Ashtanga Yoga, savasana is an opportunity to integrate the energy generated during vigorous practice. In Yin Yoga, where poses are held for long periods, savasana allows for an even deeper relaxation after releasing tensions accumulated in the connective tissue. In restorative yoga, various props are used to facilitate a state of deep relaxation, reflecting the essence of savasana in a way that is accessible to practitioners of all levels.

Spiritual Connection

Savasana also has a profound spiritual component. In many yogic traditions, it is believed that during savasana, prana, or vital energy, is distributed evenly throughout the body, facilitating energetic balance and a deeper connection with the inner self. This state of deep relaxation and connection is seen as a prelude to meditation, preparing the practitioner for a state of contemplation and inner stillness.

In summary, the origin of savasana, though rooted in ancient texts, reveals a rich and multifaceted practice that transcends simple physical relaxation. It is a pose that invites practitioners to explore the depth of conscious relaxation, surrender, and both physical and spiritual renewal.

  • Place your arms about 20–30 centimeters from your body, palms facing up.
  1. Align Your Body:
  • Imagine a line running through the center of your body, from the crown of your head to your heels.
  • Make sure both sides of your body are balanced and symmetrical along this line.
  1. Relax Your Entire Body:
  • With your inner gaze, scan your entire body, beginning at your face and ending at your toes.
  • Relax your forehead, eyelids, jaw and tongue.
  • Continue relaxing each part of the body, one by one.
  1. Adjust Your Breathing:
  • Begin with an even, deep breath.

  • Begin to gently move your toes and fingers.
  • Gently roll to one side and remain there for a few moments.

Deep Relaxation

Savasana allows the body and mind to enter a state of deep relaxation. By eliminating fatigue and releasing accumulated tension, savasana helps restore energy and calm the nervous system.

Stress Reduction

The regular practice of savasana activates the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for the "relaxation response." This reduces emotional agitation and stress, promoting a state of calm and tranquility.

Improved Mental Health

Savasana provides a space for introspection and meditation. This time of stillness helps to clarify the mind, improve concentration and enhance the overall sense of well-being.

Physical Recovery

After an intense yoga session, savasana allows the muscles to relax completely. This helps reduce muscle soreness and accelerate physical recovery.

Additional Practices to Enhance Savasana

Breath Awareness

Conscious breathing is crucial in savasana. Directing attention to the breath not only helps relax the body, but also calms the mind and enhances mental clarity. Practice deep, even breathing to connect more fully with your prana.

Use of Props

If you find it difficult to relax completely in savasana, consider using props such as blankets, blocks and bolsters. These can provide additional support and help you find a more comfortable position.

Guided Meditation

Listening to a guided meditation can be very helpful for those who find it difficult to quiet the mind in savasana. Verbal guidance can provide step-by-step instructions for relaxing each part of the body and focusing the mind.

Integrating Savasana into Daily Life

Moments of Pause

Incorporate brief moments of savasana into your daily routine. This can be as simple as taking a few minutes to lie down and practice conscious relaxation during your work break or before going to sleep.

Stress Management

Use savasana as a tool to manage stress. Whenever you feel overwhelmed or anxious, take time to practice savasana and allow your body and mind to recalibrate.

Connection with Prana

Remember that savasana is not merely a relaxation pose, but a profound practice for connecting with your prana, your vital energy. This connection can bring a greater sense of peace and vitality to your everyday life.

Conclusion

By integrating these practices into your yoga routine, you can awaken and balance the five pranas, thereby strengthening your connection with the vital energy that animates you. Through this deeper understanding of the pranas, you will be able to experience greater balance, vitality and well-being in your daily life, as well as a deeper connection with the universe that surrounds you.

Savasana is a fundamental pose in yoga that offers a wide range of benefits for body and mind. By integrating savasana into your yoga practice and daily life, you can experience greater relaxation, stress reduction and a deeper connection with your vital energy. Do not underestimate the importance of this pose; practicing savasana regularly can transform your well-being overall and enrich your experience of life.

Remember, the key to savasana is total relaxation and surrender. Allow yourself to let go completely and enjoy the benefits this pose has to offer. With practice and patience, savasana can become a powerful tool for balance and revitalization in your life.
