Why has the yoga community left breathing techniques behind? Modern yoga dedicates no more than 10% of class time to Pranayama exercises — and that's if you're lucky!
How is it possible that the philosopher's stone of yoga is evaporating from daily practice?
Even from a perspective that encompasses physical health alone, the pranayama should be given equal or greater consideration than stretching, since through its practice we achieve the proper oxygenation of the cells and all the organs of the body, the key to being free from disease.
Not to mention, if our yoga practice is focused on spiritual development. In that case, breathing techniques will make an abysmal difference in the quality of meditation. And by quality, I mean the capacity to maintain an observer's stance toward mental processes.
The importance of Pranayama in yoga practice
By controlling the amount of air that enters and leaves the lungs, we not only expand lung capacity, but also cultivate inner serenity and emotional balance.
It is not merely about inhaling and exhaling; Pranayama is a transformative tool that elevates your yoga practice beyond physical postures, guiding you into a profound state of connection with yourself.
Not to mention the benefits at the physical level. If you think Asanas are the key to keeping your body healthy, wait until you discover the incredible advantages of incorporating breathing techniques into your day-to-day life.

With the practice of Asanas you will bring flexibility and strength to your physical structure. For its part, through breathing exercises you will bring both greater quality and quantity of oxygen to your cells and all your organs of your body.
In terms of health, everything comes down to the oxygenation of our organism. To achieve a healthy body free from all disease, it is crucial that our cells are oxygenated optimally.
The disappearance of Pranayama in modern yoga
At present breathing techniques have been relegated to a complementary exercise at the end of a long stretching session — and that's in the best of cases, since they are entirely overlooked by the majority of teachers.
Without a doubt, this is a symptom of living in an extremely superficial society, obsessed with the material, incapable of delving into more subtle realities.
Our society values visible and tangible results, and yoga postures provide exactly that. In a culture focused on performance and physical appearance, the deeper connection with the breath and the essence of Pranayama can go unnoticed.

Moreover, speed and efficiency are the currency of this society, and Pranayama requires time and patience to be fully appreciated. In a fast-paced world where instant results are sought, introspective practices can seem less appealing.
This phenomenon can also be linked to a lack of complete understanding of the benefits of Pranayama. While Asanas offer evident physical rewards, the deeper benefits of Pranayama — such as mental calm and emotional balance — are internal experiences that can go unnoticed in a culture that places its focus on the external.
In conclusion, the marginalization of Pranayama in contemporary yoga practice is a reflection of the vain society in which we live, one that relegates to a secondary plane the subtler and more transformative riches offered by the ancestral art of breathing techniques.

I loved the article! I have always noticed that modern yoga classes focus more on postures and less on breathing. But how is it possible that Pranayama, which is basically the essence of yoga, is being sidelined?
I agree that today's society seeks quick and tangible results, and postures offer that. But the connection with the breath is the most important thing in yoga, isn't it?
Thank you for your comment, David 🙂 Yoga is the union of the individual with ultimate truth. Through the breath — both by exercising its control through Pranayama and through its observation in meditation — we distance ourselves from our thoughts and mental patterns, accessing a state that lies beyond the combination of mind and matter. The practice of Asanas, uniting physical movements with the breath, cannot on its own lead us to a state of liberation.
Great article!
Thank you very much, Alberto 😉
